"Peniche lives with you the joyful hours of Freedom"

Even though the Fortress of Peniche was sieged on 25 April by an Armed Forces Movement (MFA) military force from Leiria, the elements from the State Defence International Police (PIDE) only surrendered the following morning.
The gathering of people next to the Fortress, the action taken by the MFA and the decision of the prisoners that “either we all go or we don’t” led to the freedom of all prisoners on the dawn of the 27 April.
